Covered vs. enclosed vs. open RV & boat storage
The three main types, what each protects against, and the trade-offs. Prices vary a lot by city, so compare local quotes.
| Type | Protects from | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Open (uncovered) | Keeps it off your driveway and out of HOA trouble; usually fenced | Full exposure to sun, hail, snow and rain. Usually the cheapest option. |
| Covered (canopy) | Sun/UV, hail and most rain and snow on the roof | Sides stay open to wind-blown rain, dust and pests. Watch the height clearance. |
| Enclosed (garage/unit) | Weather, UV, dust, and better theft protection | Usually the most expensive, with limited sizes and often a waitlist. Some units have power. |
Which one makes sense?
- Hot, sunny climates: UV damage to roofs, decals and tires adds up, so covered is often worth it.
- Hail or heavy snow: covered or enclosed protects the roof.
- Expensive boats or classic rigs: enclosed may pay for itself in less wear.
- Short-term or older units: open is usually fine with a good cover and tire shades.
